Pondy breakfast scheme revival put off again

By Our Staff Reporter

Pondicherry Sept. 21. The revival of the Pondicherry breakfast scheme for school children, which was scheduled to be restarted on September 23, has been postponed again, the Education Minister, K. Lakshminarayanan, told a press conference here today.

The report of the District Collector, who had gone into the question of what went wrong with the supply of milk and bread on September 5 — necessitating hospitalisation of hundreds of children was available to the Government.

The report contained suggestions on toning up the quality of milk and bread. The PONLAIT (Milk project) and the PASIC (responsible for distribution of bread) had sought some time to prepare themselves to conform to the prescriptions made by the Collector.

Meanwhile he planned to make at least bread available to children in standards I to V from Wednesday.

Earlier in the day, a meeting in which officials of the Health, the Cooperative Milk project, PASIC, Education and Public Health departments held in the presence of the Chief Minister, N. Rangasamy, took stock of the scheme. It would be known on Monday whether bread alone could be distributed, to start with. Mr. Lakshminarayanan said there was no difference of opinion between him and the Chief Minister on the operation of the scheme.

Asked when the scheme would be reintroduced, he said a final report of the public health laboratory was awaited and it would not be delayed unreasonably long.

On his absence at a meeting convened by the Chief Minister for a review of the implementation of schemes by the PWD and the Local Administration Department, Mr. Lakshminarayanan said although he was invited in his capacity as an MLA, he did not have any role at the session. Further, he was preoccupied with a meeting with representatives of college students.
