Tamil Nadu
By Our Special Correspondent
Winding up the southern regional conference of the party here, Dr. Swamy said poverty and unemployment ought to have been eradicated by now. He appealed to the party volunteers to spread the spirit of nationalism among the people as Tamil Nadu was perceived to be supporting Sri Lankan militants. Dr. Swamy claimed that the party was functioning linguistic and regional considerations and held a firm belief that all its members were Indians first. Even at the political level, it would applaud the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, who had unilaterally snapped the AIADMK ties with the Janata Party, for her firm and brave action against those who supported the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam. At the same time, the party was concerned at the economy of Tamil Nadu which was "the highest taxed State'' with a "bankrupt budget'', 98 per cent of which went for salaries and pension. The AIADMK Government "is a monumental failure on the economic front''. In this scenario, he wondered how the Chief Minister could charter a flight to take an all-party delegation to New Delhi to meet the Prime Minister to press for Cauvery water release. Dr. Swamy was happy that the conference, in which volunteers from 10 districts participated, had demonstrated that his political outfit was a force to reckon with in Tamil Nadu.
