Local agent helped Abu Salem get fake passports in Kurnool

By Our Staff Reporter

KURNOOL Sept. 22. A Kurnool-based passport agent, Habib, is believed to have aided the gang of international don, Abu Salem, to secure three passports from here.

Habib has been at large for the past few months since the top police officials began an inquiry after being alerted by the Central agencies.

Habib, who migrated to the town 12 years ago, started as a hotel worker and soon started a passport agency.

He developed rapport with the passport clerk in the Special Branch, Srinivas and managed his affairs. Srinivas was believed to have played a key role in securing the verification certificates in the names of Ramil Kamal Malik, Sana Malik and Neha Asif Jafri. Film actress Monica Bedi, who was held along with Abu Salem in Lisbon, produced the passport issued in the name of Sana Malik.

During the inquiry, Srinivas had said that he had frequently met Habib in a hotel before issuing the clearance certificates.

Habib was believed to have enticed the officials by offering hefty amounts. Srinivas convinced the Assistant SI, Sattar, who was to formally inquiry into the antecedents of the applicants. The whole affair was closed and certificates issued without the officials visiting the places of applicants.

According to an estimate, scores of people were issued clearance certificates from the Kurnool centre in the past with the help of Habib, who has not been seen since February last.

The revenue officials denied that they had issued any nativity certificates to bogus people.

The revenue Inspector, Mohammad Yunus, could not immediately confirm whether the certificate in this particular case was issued by them or not.

The primary responsibility lies with the revenue authorities to confirm the residence of the applicants by visiting their place of living or asking them to produce proof such as telephone bill, electricity bill or ration card.

Meanwhile, charges under section 12 of the Passport Act, 1967, criminal conspiracy (sec. 120 (3) of IPC) and cheating (section 417 and 420) were framed against Yunus, Sattar and Srinivas in One Town police station. They were in custody but there was delay in announcing their formal arrest.
