Fidayeen killed

By Our Special Correspondent

SRINAGAR SEPT. 22. The night-long operation launched by police around the Police Housing Colony at Bemina here after an attack on Saturday ended this morning with the killing of a "Fidayeen". One policeman was killed and 11 persons, including the DIG, Kashmir, Farooq Ahmed, SP (North), Ramesh Jalla, and SDPO, Soura Shahid Meraj, were injured in the militant fire. K Rajindra, IGP (Kashmir), denied that any of the "fidayeen" escaped. All the 300 families of police officials escaped unhurt.

Outfit owns up

Al-Arifeen, a shadow outfit of the Lashkar-e-Taiba, has claimed responsibility for the attack.

A caller identifying himself as Abrar telephoned a local news agency, Kashmir Press Service, and said his outfit Al-Arifeen had carried out the attack to target policemen who killed "mujahideen" (militants).
