A doomed day for students

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI SEPT. 24. Students of Rai Foundation who met with an accident in which two of them where killed at Delhi Cantonment in South-West Delhi on Saturday night, were allegedly manhandled by some police personnel posted at the Sarita Vihar police station just half-an-hour before the mishap.

Abhay Mehta, father of one of the students, Arjun, said on the fateful day, his son went to fetch his friends from the institute hostel around 10 p.m. as they were to attend an alumni meet at Raddison Hotel. They stopped near Apollo Hospital where they had to pick up one of their friends.

The students were waiting for their friend, Shiv Vani, when a police personnel taking a stroll outside the nearby Sarita Vihar police station asked them to drive the car away as no one was allowed to park their vehicles there.

``Arjun and Gagan Deep came out of the car. Arjun was trying to convince the police personnel when the latter started manhandling him. Arjun tried to resist and the police personnel called his colleagues who came out of the police station. They dragged Arjun and Gagan Deep inside the police station and beat them up.''

Mr. Mehta said the students remained stranded at the police station for over 90-minutes after which they were allowed to go. "They were already getting late for the function and to make up for the lost time they drove very fast and lost control over the car when a pedestrian suddenly appeared on the road.''

Two of them, Gagan Deep, a resident of Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh, and Aman Bhalla, son of Raman Bhalla, an MLA from Pathankot, were killed in the gruesome accident. Their friend, Ishav Kohli, who sustained serious injuries, had to be admitted to the Intensive Care Unit of Apollo Hospital. Arjun escaped with minor injuries.

Mr. Mehta said he and other family members were planning to register a complaint against the Sarita Vihar police, when they received the information about the accident. "The Delhi Cantt police were very helpful and they extended all possible support to Arjun and others. I was pleased at the way the local police dealt with the case, unlike the Sarita Vihar police,'' said Mr. Mehta.
