Mr. Advani, who returned after visiting Gandhinagar, said ``our neighbour'' had openly challenged the elections in Jammu and Kashmir. However, he said, the success of the first two phases of polling in the State was a victory for democracy and defeat for terrorism. The Deputy Prime Minister preferred not to comment on the identity of the two terrorists, who were involved in the Akshardham temple attack. He said though some hand-written Urdu pamphlets were found on the bodies of the terrorist he would not like to say anything, on the basis of suspicion, about their identity. He said the terrorists were shot dead by the National Security Guard commandos after a fierce fight and that it appeared that they had an intention to take devotees hostage. This impression was gathered since the two were carrying rations such as dates, dry fruits and chocolates. Praising the role of the NSG and the State police in carrying out the operation, he said the forces had three tasks at hand: to rescue the devotees from the complex, avoid any damage to the temple and capture or eliminate the terrorists. ``They accomplished the task perfectly'' he said adding that the terrorists had inflicted causalties before the arrival of the police.
