Nanavati Commission term extended

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI SEPT. 26. The Union Cabinet today decided to extend by six months the tenure of the Nanavati Commission of Inquiry, which is looking into the anti-Sikh riots that took place in Delhi and other parts of the country following the assassination of the former Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi, on October 31, 1984.

This is the fourth extension for the panel headed by Justice G.T. Nanavati, a retired Judge of the Supreme Court.

After the last extension, the panel was scheduled to submit its report by October 2. Now, it has been granted time till April 3.

The Cabinet also decided to set up a separate National Commission for Scheduled Tribes, by bifurcating the National Commission for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes.

The new panel would have three members, including the Chairperson, and its office would be located here.
