More security for final phase of J&K polls

By Our Staff Reporter

Jammu Sept. 27. The Election Commission has sought stepped up security for the candidates contesting the fourth and last phase of the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections in the militancy-infested Doda district of Jammu region on October 8.

The Chief Election Commissioner, J.M. Lyngdoh, who arrived here along with the two Election Commissioners, T.S. Krishnamurthy and B.B. Tandon, on a two-day visit, toured Doda district today.

At a high-level meeting, in which Mr. Lyngdoh, the State Chief Secretary, I.S. Malhi, and senior Police officers participated, the CEC reviewed the poll preparations of the administration.

It is learnt that the CEC, in the course of the meeting, had asked for increasing the security for the

candidates in the district as the campaigning gains momentum.

The Commission has also issued instructions for using helicopters to airlift security forces and polling staff.
