Cong. too threatens to pull out of J&K polls

By Shujaat Bukhari

SRINAGAR SEPT. 27. The Congress today joined the the People's Democratic Party (PDP) in threatening to pull out of the elections in Jammu and Kashmir. It has issued a 24-hour ultimatum to the Election Commission to `take credible measures for ensuring fairness in the conduct of elections."

Accusing the State electoral office of playing a partisan role by helping the ruling National Conference, the All-India Congress Committee general secretary, Parvez Hashmi, said "the ruling party has, along with election machinery, succeeded in its endeavour. This machinery is paralysed in the Valley and it is in the hold of this single party''. He urged the Election Commission to take over the custody of electronic voting machines. "Only yesterday a machine was seized and if they have one such machine they can have hundred. If the EC doesn't take any measures, what is the fun of fighting elections?,'' he asked.

Mr. Hashmi urged the Chief Election Commissioner to take measures to ensure a free and fair third and final phase of elections. A Congress delegation would meet the EC in New Delhi.
