AMM: A keen follower of changes in economy

CHENNAI SEPT. 28. He may have passed into the pages of history. But he still lives in the minds of people especially of this industrial belt in Chennai.

Not surprisingly, the people of Ambattur-Avadi area are gearing to celebrate the birth centenary of late AMM Murugappa Chettiar tomorrow.

The first Indian to be elected president of the Madras Chambers of Commerce, AMM Murugappa Chettiar, more often, hailed for stepping aside orthodox business traditions to establish — successfully at that — well-diversified modern industrial ventures. He was known to be a keen follower of changes in economy and travelled widely within and without to keep himself abreast of the latest. Thanks to him and his friend A. Ramaswamy Mudaliar, common men in early Independence era could ride the Indian roads on a bicycle. Tube Investments of India Ltd. has come a long way since it was estabilished by AMM Murugappa Chettiar in tandem with Birmingham-based British Group. He will always be remembered for what he gave to the society at large.

Hopefully, the current generation in the family will carry on Chettiar's vision and put reputation before prosperity even in trying times.
