Salman Khan runs into trouble again

MUMBAI SEPT. 28. Bollywood star Salman Khan was arrested and later released on bail after he allegedly rammed his car into a bakery today, killing one person and injuring four persons in a city suburb in the middle of the night. Soon after the accident, which took place around 3 a.m. at Bandra, the actor fled the scene, police said. He surrendered to police later.

The actor was released on a bond of Rs. 950 and a surety. A case of rash and negligent driving was registered against him under Section 304 (A) of the Indian Penal Code, and provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act.

The victims were employees of the American Bakery and were sleeping at the door. The 38-year-old Nurula Mehboob Sharif was killed on the spot. Abdulla Rauf Abhul Shaikh (22) and Muslim Shaikh (17) were admitted to Bhabha Hospital with injuries. And the other two were discharged after first aid.

The Senior Police Inspector, Kisan Shengal, said that the actor was driving the car. After his arrest, Salman was taken to the State-run J. J. Hospital to ascertain if he was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident. The report would be available on Monday, Salman's lawyer, Waris Pathan, said.

He also claimed that Salman had already told the investigating officials that he had not consumed liquor and that he was not driving the car at the time of the accident.

Mr. Shengal said Rajendra Patil, police bodyguard who has been providing security to the actor since he allegedly received threats from the underworld, and Salman's private security guard were in the vehicle when the accident occurred.

Salman was arrested at St. Martin Road when he was on his way to the police station to give a statement. He was interrogated for over three hours. A large crowd gathered outside the police station.

The relatives of the deceased said they would decide on filing a case against Salman after getting legal advice.

Salman Khan has found himself on the wrong side of the law on more than one occasion in the past. A case related to poaching of black bucks in Rajasthan is pending against him.

The actor was also interrogated by the officials of Enforcement Directorate for alleged foreign exchange violation last year.

Salman was again in the news when he created a scene outside the residence of the actress, Aishwarya Rai.

On a complaint filed by her father, Salman was summoned to the Bandra police station and warned.
