The hospital had stated that the surgery was successful, but the infection caused by a fungal growth which existed before the surgery could not be contained. Hence, the Union Minister developed complications in his vital organs. "The fungal endocarditis has resulted in multi-organ involvement including liver and kidney for which he is under active treatment with dialysis for liver and kidney using the Molecular Adsorbent Recirculating System (MARS) dialysis machine,'' a hospital press release said. Earlier, following a request from Mr. Maran's family, Global Hospitals flew in its liver specialist, Dharmesh Kapoor, to Chennai on Sunday morning, to undertake liver dialysis with MARS. The Prime Minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee, enquired about Mr. Maran's condition, an Apollo release said. Its chairman, Prathap C.Reddy, comprehensively briefed him.
PM calls up Karunanidhi
Our Special Correspondent reports from New Delhi: Mr. Vajpayee spoke on telephone this evening to the DMK chief, M. Karunanidhi, and the Union Environment Minister, T.R.Baalu, and enquired about the condition of Mr. Maran. The Prime Minister has directed the Union Health Minister, Shatrughan Sinha, to monitor the situation personally and make available the best medical facilities for Mr. Maran.
