Campaign ends on violent note in J&K

By Shujaat Bukhari

Srinagar Sept. 29. Campaigning for the third phase, in which 27 Assembly segments of Anantnag, Pulwama, Kathua and Udhampur go to polls on Tuesday, ended this evening on a violent note. Militants hurled a grenade in Tral, killing one civilian and injuring 17.

Police sources said the militants hurled a grenade at a security force patrol at the bus stand and followed it up with indiscriminate firing. A civilian, Mohammad Ayub, died on the spot, while 17, including six security personnel, sustained serious injuries. In Eidgah area of the same town in South Kashmir, militants fired a rifle grenade at security personnel, injuring one of them. Tral witnessed low-key campaigning, after the killing of a number of party workers by militants.

Campaigning in the rest of the segments ended without any major incident with the parties organising large rallies, particularly in Udhampur and Kathua districts.

In Anantnag and Pulwama districts, the National Conference president, Omar Abdullah, addressed a number of meetings along with some Ministers.

The People's Democratic Party leaders, Muzaffar Hussain Beig and Mehbooba Mufti and Congress leaders, Saifuddin Soz and Peerzada Mohammad Saeed, also addressed a number of rallies to mark the end of campaigning for the third phase.

The NC has fielded candidates in all the segments, while the Congress has 20 and the PDP 18 in the fray. The BJP has put up 24, apart from which, there are 46 independents in the race.
