Letters to the Editor
Sir, Shortage of water in the Cauvery basin is a worrisome problem for both Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. While both the States have increased the area under cultivation, nothing has been done to increase the water supply from Kodagu (Coorg), the main source of the Cauvery. On the other hand, rainfall has come down in Kodagu, thanks to mindless conversion of more and more forest land into tea and coffee estates. An effort must be made not only to arrest this trend, but also to undertake a vigorous programme of afforestation in Kodagu, so as to increase rainfall. This long-term vision seems to be lacking in both the States. They should wake up at least now.
R.A. Padmanabhan,
Sir, Art has always played a vital role in uniting different parts of our country and cementing people in spite of diversity. The recent action of the artistes of Karnataka in relation to the Cauvery water issue and the feelings expressed by the artistes of Tamil Nadu would appear to undermine the object of art. It would be better if influential artistes of both the States work together to foster unity among the people of the two States.
V. Pasupathi,
