President unveils statues of eminent leaders

NEW DELHI OCT. 1. The President, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, today unveiled life-size statues of national leaders, C.N. Annadurai, Gopinath Bordoloi, Pasumpon Muthuramalinga Thevar, and S. Satyamurti, at a special function in Parliament House today.

The statue of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Annadurai, an eminent parliamentarian, social reformer and scholar was sculpted by Mohandass and donated by the Tamil Nadu Government. Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi, who was an eminent freedom fighter, outstanding parliamentarian, progressive administration and a Gandhian, nurtured the dream of a modern and progressive Assam.

His statue was sculpted by Pranabendu B. Dhar and donated by the Assam Government. Pasumpon Muthuramalinga Thevar was a versatile personality, freedom fighter, parliamentarian, a trade union leader and social and religious reformer.

Satyamurti, was an eminent freedom fighter, visionary leader, a parliamentarian and social worker.

He was also an eminent lawyer, educationist and connoisseur of art and culture.

The statues of the late Thevar and Satyamurti were sculpted by Kishore J. Nagappa and donated by former Union Commerce Minister, Subramanian Swamy.

Earlier, Dr. Kalam also inaugurated an exhibition "Glimpses of the life and times'' of these leaders organised by the Parliamentary Museum and Archives of the Lok Sabha secretariat.

The function was attended, among others, by the Vice-President, Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, Prime Minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee, the Deputy Prime Minister, L.K. Advani, the Lok Sabha Speaker, Manohar Joshi, Union Ministers, the Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, Manmohan Singh, the Assam Governor, S.K. Sinha, the Assam Chief Minister, Tarun Gogoi, the Tamil Nadu PWD Minister, O. Panneerselvam, the AIADMK parliamentary party delegation, including P.H. Pandian and P. G Narayanan, the Union Minister, T.R. Baalu, the DMK leader, Viduthalai Virumbi and Janata Party president, Subramanian Swamy.
