Voltas to make refrigerators for Samsung

By Our Staff Reporter

CHENNAI OCT. 1. Voltas, which produces refrigerators for LG on a contract basis, will soon start producing refrigerators for Samsung as well, according to its Managing Director, Ashok Soni. The Samsung order was expected shortly and Voltas hoped to produce 1-2 lakh refrigerators for Samsung. The company had a capacity to produce four lakh refrigerators annually. Last year, it produced about 2.5 lakh refrigerators in the 165 litre and 210 litre categories for LG.

Mr. Ashok Soni, who was in Chennai to announce a series of marketing initiatives for Voltas air-conditioners, said besides refrigerators, the company was also churning out fizzy coolers for Pepsi and Amul. In air-conditioners, he said, the company would launch a new range of room and split air-conditioners in February-March next. These products would have improved energy efficiency ratio. It would also launch 0.8 tonne air-conditioners, targeted at people in coastal areas and for smaller homes.

The company had embarked on a major exercise to `rejuvenate' the Voltas brand. It would use service as a key differentiator of its brand building exercise. Last year, the company had earmarked Rs. 60 crores for brand building and marketing to be spent over a period. It had so far spent about Rs. 12 crores on its new brand `Vertis' and for setting up additional outlets and `Voltas Domes'.
