Tamil Nadu
By K.T. Sangameswaran
After taking shelter in Bangalore, one of the accused was stated to have married Yasmin, who also died in the encounter. It was being investigated whether the woman had come to police notice in the past, police sources told The Hindu. Seeniappa alias Seeni Sulthan Moideen alias Safifullah of Madurai, Bazeer alias Mangaai Bazeer alias Anwar of Melapalayam and Mohamed Ibrahim alias Ibrahim, also of Madurai, figured as accused in the charge sheet filed by the police against 30 persons, under various provisions of the IPC, including 120-B (criminal conspiracy), 506 (II) (criminal intimidation) and 307 (attempt to murder) and under the Explosive Substances Act and the Tamil Nadu Property (prevention of damage and loss) Act. The three were part of the gang, which secured the release of Imam Ali, cited as the first accused, and Hyder Ali (since nabbed again and who figured as the second accused) from police custody at Tirumangalam. As Imam Ali and the three others were stated to be absconding, the police spread the dragnet for them. Further investigation into the case was on. Yasmin, also of Madurai, was stated to have worked as unqualified nurse in a private hospital in the temple city. The police received information that Seeniappa married her in Bangalore about a fortnight ago. In the case of Imam Ali's escape from custody, she had not come to police notice. However, as she was also found along with the other accused in a house in Bangalore, inquiries about her needed to be done, the sources said. With the death of the four accused, the charges against them "abated". All that the police could now do was to inform the court in writing of the deaths, enclosing death certificates. While the police in general heaved a sigh of relief after the Bangalore operations, a section of officers felt that more information could have been obtained from the accused had the police managed to nab at least a couple of them. Among the other cases in which Imam Ali was cited as accused was the one handled by the CBI and relating to the blasting of the RSS headquarters at Chetput here in August 1993. Here again, the charge against him now "abated".
Bodies buried
Our Madurai Staff Reporter adds: The bodies of Jihad Committee activist, Imam Ali, and four others, were buried here today. The kin of the deceased brought the bodies of Imam Ali, Seeniappa, his wife, Yasmin, Mohammed Ibrahim, and `Manga' Basheer, from Bangalore this morning. The burial took place under tight security at Sungam dargah in Nelpettai. More than 1,500 Muslims attended the special prayers. Mediapersons and police personnel were barred entry. Black flags furled in several parts of Madurai for the second day today. The police have beefed up security at vulnerable points.
