Breach of norms: BMP blames BDA

By Our Staff Reporter

BANGALORE Oct. 2. The Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BMP) has criticised the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) for sanctioning the plan submitted by the Rashtreeya Shikshana Samithi Trust for the construction of a college building in violation of norms. The work on the building is going on.

In a letter dated September 11, 2002 to the Lokayukta, N. Venkatachala, the BMP Commissioner, M.R. Sreenivas Murthy, said the site on which the building was coming up had also been granted by the BDA.

``The northern boundary of the site extends up to the edge of a road and includes land falling within the alignment of the footpath at 36th Cross, T Block, Jayanagar,'' he said.

The Lokayukta, in response to a public complaint, had asked the BMP Commissioner to inquire about the encroachment of footpaths in the area by the trust.

Mr. Murthy was asked to take action against the BMP officers who had allowed this, and submit a report before August 31.

"The trust has in fact utilised a considerable part of the land meant for the footpath.

The extent of this encroachment is 2.18 metres on a side and 3.94 metres on another side.

The length of the encroachments is about 85 metres,'' he said.

``Before we take further action in this matter, it is considered necessary to get the BDA to rectify the boundaries of the site given to the trust as shown in the plan.

The BMP South Zone Deputy Commissioner has been asked to take up the matter with the BDA. As soon as that is done, the BMP will take action to clear the footpath of encroachments," he added.
