Project to improve quality of Ganga water

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI Oct. 3. The Union Environment Ministry is all set to take up a project with the assistance of the Japan International Cooperation to improve the quality of water in river Ganga to ``bathing class'' in Allahabad, Varanasi, Kanpur and Lucknow.

An agreement in this regard was signed here today.

The project focuses on these cities as besides being important pilgrim centres, they are also responsible for the pollution of the river.

They are estimated to generate 1,170 million litres of waste water per day or nearly 65 per cent of the total of 1,819 million litres of waste water generated in all the cities and towns along Ganga and Gomati.
