Two die of cholera in Gujarat

GANDHINAGAR OCT. 3. At least two persons have died in a cholera outbreak in five villages in Padra taluka in Vadodara district in central Gujarat.

The Health Secretary, S. K. Nanda, said of the two deaths, one case had been proven to be cholera while the other was a "cholera-related'' one. He claimed that four other deaths reported from the affected villages during the last couple of days were not due to cholera but other reasons. While one of them had reportedly committed suicide, the other died due to lack of haemoglobin, the third case was of dehydration and the fourth, a youth, who was being treated in the hospital for gastroenteritis but was forcibly taken home by his relatives where he developed complications and died last night.

Mr. Nanda said of the 232 cases of gastroenteritis and other related diseases admitted in the government hospitals, 14 have tested cholera positive. Other patients had been found to be suffering from other water-borne diseases. The condition of all the 232 patients including the 14 cholera cases were improving and were out of danger.
