Long wait takes its toll on women

By Our Staff Reporter

ANANTAPUR OCT. 7. A jarring note was struck at a meeting addressed by the Chief Minister, N. Chandrababu Naidu, as several women swooned by the time meeting began. Apparently the long wait in the hot sun had taken its toll. As men too were allowed for the meeting, they pushed the women forward leading to jostling.

The Chief Minister expressed apologies repeatedly to women for the inconvenience caused to them.

During a visit to tamarind plantation taken up under Chintato Nishinta (2002) at Dadulur in the district, he against expressed reservations over encouraging tamarind plantation.

Mr. Naidu ordered for a study on the possibilities of implementing the experiment of using `kanuga' oil as fuel for power generation being done in agency areas of Adilabad district on a large scale all over the State.

He remarked that there was no market for tamarind now and it would further go down in future as people were stopping its use.

Instead he suggested taking up `vepa and kanuga' plantation.

He also inspected a breach-filling work and paletivanka pick-up anicut and interacted with labourers there.

The District Collector, Somesh Kumar, explained that tamarind plantation was taken up in 13,000 acres this year and 6,000 acres last year. It was being planted in at least 10 acres in every gram panchayat, he stated. `Vepa and kanuga' plantation was taken up as wood lots in about 5,000 acres, he noted.

At C.K.Palli, the Chief Minister visited a photo exhibition on the drought situation, received representations from political parties and interacted with schoolchildren.

At a `mahila chaitanya sadassu' in Anantapur, he reiterated his assurance to develop women as a force in society. He would implement several welfare and development programmes for them but there was need for more awareness among them.

Mobilising of Rs. 1,400 crores by DWCRA groups through their thrift activity was a world record, he stated. He also called upon the women to fight corruption in public works. He also distributed assets worth Rs. 21 crores under programmes of different departments.
