Postal Dept. comes of e-age

By Our Staff Reporter

KURNOOL Oct. 7. An informal in-house computer centre here developed postal software for use throughout the country. Surprisingly, the computer cell is not headed by IIT-trained software professionals but a few people whose designation was only postal assistants (clerks). The software developed by the team was in demand South Asian countries. Disclosing this to reporters here on Monday, the Post Master-General, K.V. Sundara Rajan, said the work by the team brought recognition to the centre at the national level.

On coming across postal assistants who held formal qualifications in computer applications like MCA, MS and BCA, Mr. Sundar Rajan proposed to set up a computer laboratory and secured permission from the department accordingly. After working on the project for two years, the team developed "head record software'' which handled the core work of the Postal Department. The software was in application at 23 centres across the country now. In fact, the department incurred no additional expenditure except sparing its highly qualified staff. The Postal Department has no exclusive computer lab any where in the country except at Postal Training Centre, Mysore.

Enthused by the success, the team had now begun working on developing "circle bag accounting,'' another crucial area of the postal service. Mr. Sundara Rajan said the team, which was well-versed with the functioning of the Postal Department did not find it difficult to develop the software suitable for its applications. Had the project been given to a professional company, it could have charged a fortune.

Mr. Sundara Rajan said the department brought out a stamp on the Tirumala shrine, which would be released by the Union Minister for Communications, Pramod Mahajan, on October 11. The Chief Minister, N. Chandrababu Naidu, would witness the function. Also, the department was planning to bring out another stamp on Srisailam.
