Dalits cry halt to disinvestment

By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD Oct. 7. The All-India Confederation of SC/ST Organisations has demanded the Centre to put an end to its disinvestment drive as it was "killing the reservation system and hampering the employment chances of the weaker sections."

"The Disinvestment Ministry must be discontinued immediately and the Disinvestment Minister, Arun Shourie, sacked, lest the nation's interests be sold away in no time," the confederation's national chairman, Udit Raj, demanded here on Monday.

He said the assets of the nation were being disposed of at throwaway prices in the name of privatisation and this was leading to poverty and large-scale unemployment, particularly among the Dalits. "The SCs and STs are the worst hit as their employment opportunities have been badly affected by privatisation and there is a widespread concern among them over the ongoing disinvestment drive," he said.

Demanding that the rights of Dalits enshrined in the Constitution like reservation in education and employment should be implemented in letter and spirit, he said any move by the Sangh Pariwar to bring about changes would be thwarted.

He said the confederation was organising a rally in New Delhi on October 24 against the privatisation policy of the Centre. The focus of the rally would also be on reservations in the private sector. He appealed to weaker sections welfare organisations and people of the State to attend the rally in big numbers.
