Palwinder bags bronze

BUSAN Oct. 7. Palwinder Singh Cheema did India proud as he struck a bronze in the super heavyweight (120 kg) freestyle wrestling competitions of the 14th Asian Games at the Yangsan gymnasium on Monday.

In the losers' final bout, the Indian defeated South Korean Shin Jung-Hun 4-0. Earlier in the repechage round, Cheema had outclassed Li Jinlong (China) 3-1.

In the 96 kg class, Anil Kumar Mann, whose participation in itself was marked by controversy, was shown the exit by Kazakhstan's Islam Bairamukov. Also meeting the same fate was Sujit Mann who was downed by Iran's Mehdi Hajizadehjoybari in the 74 kg category.

However, Shukwinder Tomar had an easy win over Vietnam's Doi Dang Hy in the preliminary round of the 60 kg category. He will meet Afghanistan's Mir Mohammed Nadar in the next round.

In the women's section also, the Indians had a indifferent round as Alka Tomar was defeated by Japan's Saori Yoshida in the 55 kg class and Gursharan Preet Kaur by Kyoko Hamaguchi in the 74 kg category. — Our Special Correspondent
