Paes-Bhupathi pair back in business

BUSAN Oct. 7. India had a good day at the Geumjeong tennis stadium as all its entrants made it past the second round, after drawing a bye in the first round, as the individual events of the 14th Asian Games got underway on Monday.

In men's singles, Sunil Kumar Sipaeya defeated Amrit Rupasinghe 6-1, 6-2, while Rohan Bopanna despatched East Timor's Matias de Sousa out of the tournament with an equally easy 6-2, 6-0 victory.

The day also saw Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi come together for the first time since their second split earlier this year and knock the stuffing out of Pakistan's Rashid Malik and Aqeel Khan 6-0, 6-1. The Indian duo required just 29 minutes to complete the formality.

In the women's singles, both Nirupama Vaidyanathan and Sania Mirza were also not stretched in any way as they progressed ahead comfortably. While Nirupama defeated Natsagsuren Jigjidsuren (Mongolia) 6-0, 6-0, Sania downed Yulia Kltmchenko (Kyrgyzstan) 6-1, 6-0.

Earlier, Japan took the men's team title with a 2-0 win over South Korea. The match being completed with the straight set victory achieved by Michihisa Onoda and Takahiro Terachi over Yoon Yong-Il (6-1, 6-3) and Lee Hyung-Taik (6-4, 6-2) respectively. — Our Special Correspondent
