India moves up three places

By Our Special Correspondent

BUSAN Oct. 7. India enjoying its most successful day this far, having its tally boosted by the golds struck by Anju Bobby George and the kabaddi team and the bronze gained by wrestler Palwinder Singh Cheema, moved up three notches from its overnight 12th position at the end of the ninth day of competitions in the 14th Asian Games on Monday.

Perhaps, apart from the medal-winning efforts, the best news for the Indian camp arrived from the boxing arena where Ramanand easily outpointed Afghanistan's Tamim Ahmed Akhtari 16-1 to enter the quarterfinals of the light weight (60 kg) category. However, there was considerable disappointment as Harpal Singh lost his quarterfinal bout against Uzbekistan's Rustam Saidov by RSC.

In archery, Indian men finished fourth in the team event, a creditable achievement by itself. India was just six points behind the bronze-medallist China (1903), while the silver for the event was collected by Japan and gold by the host South Korea.

In the individual rankings, Kailash was placed 10th with a total of 1313 while Satyadev finished five notches behind with 1303 points. Limba Ram was 17th and Ved Kumar was 30th with scores of 1301 and 1271 respectively. In the women's section, Dola Banerjee finished 10th with 1314 points.

In sailing, India continued to hold sway in the OK Dinghy class wherein Nitin Mongia remained the leader with a total of 14 points. He now has a one-point lead over South Korea's H.C. Jin.

In the Enterprise class, Ashim Mongia and crew R. Mahesh was in the second position at the end of the seventh race, while Rajesh Chaudhary was third in the Laser Radial class, also after seven races. Four more races remain to be completed.
