Paes advances easily

By A. Vinod

BUSAN Oct. 8. India had mixed fortunes at the tennis events of the 14th Asian Games at the Geumjeong stadium courts on Tuesday, even as the top-seeded Srichaphan Paradorn of Thailand easily cruised through to the men's singles third round with a 6-0, 6-1 demolition of Kyrgyzstan's Eduard Koifman.

The Thai player was fully in control as he whipped his rival in less than three-quarters of an hour and losing only 12 points.

However, Paradorn's attempt to retain the doubles gold along with his brother Srichaphan Narathorn was quashed in the second round by Japan's Motomura Goichi and Thomas Shimada 6-4, 3-6, 6-2.

Goichi, earlier, had also caused heart-break to the Indian camp defeating Sunil Kumar Sipaeya 6-2, 7-6 (1) in a men's singles second round encounter.

The Indian contingent also met with reverses in the women's singles and doubles before Mahesh Bhupathi and Manisha Malhotra came up with a morale-boosting quarterfinal win over their Chinese Taipei rivals Chung Chia Jung and Wang Yeu Tzuoo 7-5, 7-5 in the mixed doubles. Leander Paes and Sania Mirza also met with success against Japan's Shinobu Asagoe and Thomas Shimada winning their second round tie 6-3, 6-3.

Also advancing into the third round today were the Indian men's doubles pair of Vishal Uppal and Mustafa Ghouse who made short work of Chinese Taipei's Cheng Wei Jen and Chen Ti 6-1, 6-4.

Sania Mirza was forced to bow out of the women's singles losing her second round match against Japan's Saori Obata 4-6, 2-6. Nirupama Vaidynathan was also ousted by another Japanese player, Shinobu Asagoe 1-6, 0-6. The Indian campaign in the women's doubles also met with a reverse when Rushmi Chakravarthi and Ankita Shambri failed to put it across Hsieh Su We and Chan Chin Wei (Chinese Taipei) 0-6, 3-6.
