The opening Test of this series at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai will be West Indies' sixth at this venue since the first in January 1975. The team from the Caribbean now has the distinction of appearing in most Test matches than any other visiting team at this ground. The Windies had won the first ever Test match here in 1975 by 201 runs, while the home team, India won the last Test to be played between the two sides, in 1994 by 96 runs. Rest of the matches played between the two sides in 1978, 1983 and 1987 were drawn. In the five matches, the West Indian batsmen have scored 2489 runs, while averaging 38.89 runs per innings, with four hundreds and 13 fifties, while Indian batsmen have managed to aggregate 2671 runs (avg. 30.70) with three hundreds and 19 fifties. The Caribbean bowlers have captured 85 wickets @ 32.51 runs per wicket and at a strike rate of 68.21 balls per wicket and an economy rate of 2.86 runs per over in five matches. Indian bowlers have taken 61 wickets @ 41.15, at a strike rate of 81.56 balls per wicket and an economy rate of 3.03 runs per over. The only two double centurions at this ground for the two teams are Clive Lloyd (242 not out in 1975) and Sunil Gavaskar (205 in 1978). West Indian off-spinner Lance Gibbs (7-98 in 1975) and Indian left-arm spinner Venkatapathy Raju (5-60 in 1994) have the best bowling figures against each other at this venue. Finally, out of the 146 wickets (avg. 36.12) taken by bowlers from both sides at the Wankhede Stadium, spin has accounted for just 56 wickets (avg. 44.20) at a strike-rate of 96.23 balls per wicket, while pace bowlers have been more successful with 90 wickets (avg. 31.09) and have a strike-rate of 59.82 balls per wicket. Interestingly, in the 18 Test matches played overall at this venue since 1975, both pace and spin bowlers have shared 278 wickets each. However, pace bowlers have a better bowling average (29.30) and strike-rate of 59.74 balls per wicket as against a bowling average of 30.96 and strike rate of 66.83 for the spinners!
