No change in overall position

By Our Special Correspondent

BUSAN Oct. 8. India, though enjoying a good haul from its athletes and a bronze from Geet Sethi, still was stranded at its overnight ninth position in the overall medals tally at the end of the 10th day of competitions in the 14th Asian Games on Tuesday.

But for the medal strikes and a reasonable performance in tennis, it was otherwise another disappointing day for the Indians. The most shocking result being the defeat of Commonwealth Games gold-medallist Mohammed Ali Qamar in the light flyweight category of the boxing events.

Pitted against Harry Tanamore of Philippines, Qamar gave a good account of himself and was a victim of poor judging as he failed to get into the medal reckoning on a points decision.

The Indian challenge in the archery events suffered another reverse when Dola Banerjee failed to progress into the semifinals of the women's individual event, losing to eventual winner Shuchi Yuan of Chinese Taipei in the quarterfinals. The other Indian in the fray, Chekrovolu Swuro had been eliminated in the first round itself.

In equestrian, though much was expected after the bronze medal from the three-day event, India could finish only fifth and last in the dressage team event held today. The Indians could manage only 2849 points, almost 600 less than the eventual winner, South Korea.

Grappler Shokinder Tomar, in the meanwhile, lost a bronze narrowly in the 60kg class of freestyle wrestling being defeated by Oyunbileg Purevbaatar of Mongolia on points.

In table tennis, the Indian challenge was practically over as Somyadeep Roy was eliminated in the second round of the men's singles by Kim Taek-Soo (11-4, 11-8, 11-6, 8-11, 11-4) of the host country. Roy had prevailed over Sukhee Galbadrakh of Mongolia 11-8, 2-11, 11-7, 13-15, 11-3, 11-9 in the opening round. Subhajit Saha, the other Indian in the fray, had been defeated in the first round itself by Chiang Peng Lung of Chinese Taipei (11-5, 11-7, 10-12, 11-3).

India finished its engagements in Group A of the men's volleyball competitions with a 25-22, 25-17, 25-14 win over Qatar. Being placed in their group, the Indians will figure in the classifications matches for the fifth to eighth places and will meet Pakistan on Thursday and Chinese Taipei on Saturday.
