Asian Games
By Our Special Correspondent
The decision of the race officer to abandon a major part of the day's programme, almost three hours before the scheduled deadline, left the already-agitated Indian contingent angry as Farokh Tarapore and Vikas Kapila were denied a medal in the 420 class. The world champions, after a poor start, had slowly but surely started to show some form as they recovered from the initial seventh position before finishing fourth after the 10th race on Tuesday. For the record, India returned a haul of one silver and two bronze medals. The Mumbai-based Mongia family had a lot to cheer today. Surinder Kumar Mongia, the proud father of Nitin and Ashim (who took the bronze in the Enterprise class along with R. Mahesh) was a happy man. Nitin, having been assured of a silver in the OK Dinghy class on Tuesday itself, said he had planned not to race today as he had a comfortable lead over his immediate Thai rival, V. Puangnak, who took the bronze. ``I was sure of gaining the second sailing gold (after Farokh Tarapore in the Fireball category in the 1982 Games in New Delhi), until the Koreans sought to take advantage of being the home side. Yet, the silver by itself, is a major achievement and I am happy about it." The results (Indian medallists): OK Dinghy class: 1. H. C. Jin (Kor) 11 points, 2. Nitin Mongia (Ind) 14, 3. V. Puangnak (Tha) 18; Enterprise class: 1. J.H. Hun/K. Jung (Kor) 12, 2. S. Arshad/R. Muhammed (Pak) 21, 3. Ashim Mongia/R. Mahesh (Ind), 22; Laser Radial class: 1. S. Shen (Chn) 9, 2. J.G. Kim (Kor) 15, 3. Rajesh Chaudhary (Ind) 22.
