CPI anguish over Cauvery row

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI OCT. 10. The Communist Party of India has urged the Karnataka and Tamil Nadu Governments not to use human misery for a `chauvinistic political game' as it would harm the national interest.

Expressing deep anguish and concern over the growing polarisation in the two States over the Cauvery water crisis, the party said in a statement that while there was no doubt that the people of both the States were facing serious difficulties, this was the time when they should close ranks and face the natural calamity unitedly.

"Unfortunately, certain political parties and the ruling circles in both the States are more interested in rousing the chauvinistic passion and scoring political points. A few national political parties like the BJP and the Congress have created a grave challenge for the federal polity of the country. On the other hand, the Tamil Nadu Government, instead of sorting out the issue with the CRA, has adopted an attitude of non-cooperation. That, too, is deplorable'', the statement said.

The CPI urged the Karnataka Government to abide by the apex court's order and take up its difficulties to the CRA and simultaneously asked the Tamil Nadu Government to give up its attitude of non-cooperation and discuss difficulties of people of Karnataka with the CRA.
