NC paid the price for opportunism: CPI(M)

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI OCT. 10. The Communist Party of India (Marxist) today said the ruling National Conference had paid the price in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections for "its opportunism in aligning with the Bharatiya Janata Party at the Centre", a party which rejected Article 370 and autonomy for the State.

"The betrayal by the National Conference of its secular traditions by joining hands with the communal BJP has not been forgiven by the people in the Valley. The misrule of the Farooq Abdullah Government has also contributed to the popular discontent," the CPI(M) politburo said in a statement.

The politburo, which is in session in Kolkata now, said the results showed that the people would have exercised their franchise in a bigger way if the political dialogue to resolve the outstanding issues had been initiated earlier.

It said the elections were a rebuff to the militants and underlined the fact that there was no way to resolve the Kashmir issue, except through the democratic process and dialogue.

The CPI(M) has won two seats. Mohd. Yusuf Tarigami, State secretary and Central Committee member, has been re-elected from Kulgam and Khaliq Naik has been elected from Wanchi for the first time.
