Mumbai agog over Amitabh birthday

Mumbai Oct. 11 . Hindi superstar, Amitabh Bachchan, turned 60 today and was warmly greeted by his friends and fans. Mr. Bachchan, with his family and close friends offered prayers at Tirumala on Thursday and returned home early this morning.

He sought blessings of his parents, Harivanshrai Bachchan and Teji Bachchan, and had a quiet lunch with family at home.

The birthday was a big event of the day, as city papers were full of tributes from friends and well-wishers.

Industrialist, Anil Ambani, recalled his close association with the star in a city newspaper, while another friend, Subrata Roy Sahara, of `Sahara India' wished Mr. Bachchan with full-sized photographs of him in various newspapers.

Companies to which Mr. Bachchan has been a brand ambassador through commercials, put up hoardings in various parts of the city.

Private television channels were running quiz programmes on the life and times of the actor and offering prizes through lucky draws capitalising on his popularity in recent years as the anchor of the `Kaun Banega Crorepati' programme.

Mr. Bachchan, on the eve of his birthday, said in an interview that he did not want to celebrate the occasion on a grand scale as his parents were ailing, but was bowing to the love and affection of his friends, admirers and family.

Book released

`To be or not to be', a coffee-table book on Mr. Bachchan, was released by his granddaughter Navyanaveli.

The book chronicles three decades of the actor's journey to the film world. Published by Jaya Bachchan, the book has been written by the film critic, Khaleed Mohammed. — UNI, PTI
