189 laws in three years

By Our Legal Correspondent

NEW DELHI OCT. 11. The NDA Government has taken several steps to improve the lot of people during the first three years since October 13, 1999 by enacting 189 laws. According to an official release, the three years witnessed hectic legislative activity. In addition to 189 laws, 22 ordinances were promulgated; 15 constitutional orders and five Presidential regulations issued. Added to these, 9,600 statutory rules and notifications were issued by the Government comprising all Ministries and departments.

Seven Constitution amendment Acts — from the 79th to 85th amendments — were effected during the period. The Government also reviewed all the 357 amending Acts enforced between 1984 and 1999 through the process of scavenging of the statute book. By the repealing and amending Act, 2001, a total of 305 Acts were wholly repealed, while 52 Acts were repealed partially and amended, says the release.
