Two sarpanches done to death

By Our Staff Reporter

GUNTUR OCT. 11. The sarpanch of Musarapenta village of Veldurthy mandal in Guntur district, Jarapala Sukya Naik (45) of the Congress, and his son, Sreenu Naik (13), were hacked to death by their rivals belonging to the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) last night.

According to the Superintendent of Police, P.S.R. Anjaneyulu, the killings were suspected to be due to differences between Sukya Naik and some villagers over the conduct of a village goddess festival.

The assassins struck Sukya Naik and his son with axes when they were returning from Gottipalla village to their native place along with their family members. The assailants included Mantru Naik, Pitchaa Naik, Pathya Naik, Tara Naik and their followers. All of them owe allegiance to the ruling TDP. Horrified by the attack, the family members of Sukya Naik fled the scene.

The SP said that there was no factional feud between the two groups. It was only incidental that the two groups, belonging to the same community, were sailing with the two major political parties. He said that trouble broke out in the village due to some reasons during the Mahalakshmi Jatara in August. In fact, the police arrested some of them following the disturbance in the village at that time. The Macherla CI, V.Subba Reddy, was investigating the case.

KARIMNAGAR: In a gruesome incident, a village sarpanch belonging to the TDP was murdered due to old rivalry in Dubba Thimmayipalli village of Kodimial mandal last night.

According to police sources, the sarpanch, Daya Suresh (27) was participating in a marriage procession when some miscreants began attacking him with sticks.

He was beaten black and blue. The villagers immediately shifted him to the Jagtial area hospital where he was announced brought dead. The Jagtial legislator, T. Jeevan Reddy, and others consoled bereaved family members.
