Night power cut lifted in 21 urban centres

By Our Special Correspondent

Hyderabad Oct. 11. Night power cut was lifted in a majority of towns yesterday following relief given by rain. Giving this information to reporters here on Friday after interacting with district distribution officials through a videoconference, the Energy Minister, K. Subbarayudu, and the Transco CMD, Rachel Chatterjee, said they were trying to remove daytime cut also for towns where possible. The six-hour cut for the rural areas, spread over daytime and night, would continue till the situation improved.

To start with, the benefit of lifting daytime cut is being given to 21 towns with immediate effect and they are as follows: Vizianagaram, Bobbili, Peddapuram, Kakinada, Cuddapah, Rayachoti, Guntur, Bapatla, Chirala, Madanapalle, Vijayawada, Proddatur, Mancherial, Warangal, Khammam, Rajahmundry, Nellore, Chittoor, Kavali, Tenali and Repalle.

The Minister said when the cut was lifted last night, trouble was reported only from two sub-stations -- one at Kothur in Mahabubnagar and the other at Ramagundam in Karimnagar district -- but it was resolved soon after.

The grid, he added, still suffered a shortage of 10 million units with the total output lagging at 138.30 mu, as seen on Thursday, compared to the unrestricted demand, 148.30 mu. The main reason for this was a drastic fall in hydel generation which fell to 7.19 mu on Thursday as against 29.04 mu the same day last year.

Heavy Rain forecast: Many places in the State received rain on Friday under the influence of the "trough of low pressure'' now lying in the sea extending from the South West Bay off the Tamil Nadu coast to the West Central Bay off the A.P. coast.

In the light of the South-West monsoon becoming "vigorous'' in Rayalaseema and "active'' in Coastal Andhra as a result, the State Met Office here today issued a "heavy rainfall warning,'' valid for 48 hours from this morning, to the districts of West Godavari, Krishna, Guntur, Nellore and Prakasam.
