Asian Games
By Our Special Correspondent
It was by many ways a disappointing day for the Indians as they failed to retain the hockey gold and badminton star P. Gopi Chand was beaten in the men's singles quarterfinals. The only bright note then was the fifth place finish in volleyball after the Indian spikers brought off a 25-23, 25-21, 18-25, 34-32 win over Chinese Taipei in the last of the classification matches. The Indians was also haunted by poor form in the equestrian event, wherein the team of Jaspal Massih, Sudhir Ahlawat, Sandeep Dewan and Sajjan Kumar could finish only ninth and last in the team show jumping final round after logging 115 penalty points. In taekwondo, India's chance of a medal through Imran Mohammed was struck down by Jordan's Al-Asmar Ali in the third round of the bantam weight (62 kg) preliminaries. Imran had won over Sainhishig Ariunbold (Mongolia) and Bhutan's Kusung Wangdi in the first and second round. However, in the women's bantam weight (55 kg), Nanao Sagolsem Devi was a utter failure, losing to Renuka Magar (Nepal) in the first round itself. The same fate was also reserved for Damang Syngkon, who lost to South Korean Jeong Seong-Hun in the first round of the men's kumite (55 kg) in the karatedo competition.
