Nations Cup: Indians muff chance to qualify

JOHOR BAHRU (Malaysia) OCT. 13. India frittered away a golden chance for qualifying to the World Cup golf championship after having raised some realistic hopes over the last two days.

It was yet another usual story of `so near yet so far' as the Indian team of Mukesh Kumar and Feroz Ali Mollah wretchedly scrambled to three-over 75 in the final round of the Davidoff Nations Cup, the World Cup qualifier, at the par-72 Palm Resort Golf and Country Club here on Sunday.

Playing a round of 68, Andre Bossert and Mark Chatelain put Switzerland one stroke ahead of the rest of the field and booked the first World Cup berth. It had an aggregate of 24-under 264.

A shot behind Switzerland were Myanmar, Singapore and the Philippines, all with the score of 265. In the play-off for the remaining two tickets, Myanmar and Singapore surged ahead of the Filipinos.

The Philippines was given the first reserve status while Thailand achieved the second reserve slot after finishing 22-under 266.

The $3 million EMC World Cup will be held in Mexico from December 12 to 15.

Overnight, India was just two strokes behind the leaders and the way the course played on Sunday, even a round of 67 would have put the Indians in contention. Mukesh and Feroz had got better by the day firing 63 on the third day after the rounds of 67 and 68.

But on Sunday, nothing much came their way. They could birdie only the par-fives, the seventh, 11th and 16th holes. The duo endured bogeys on the 10th, 13th and 17th holes and a hope-shattering triple bogey on the par-four 15th.

Mukesh and Feroz took the turn with 35 on the front nine, but the pressure caught on them homewards, signalling it was time for them to catch the next flight out for home.

The scores (after 72 holes): Switzerland (Andre Bossert, Mark Chatelain) (64, 66, 66, 68) 264; Singapore (Mardan Mamat, Lam Chih Bing) (64, 69, 63, 69), Myanmar (Kyi Hla Han, Soe Kyaw Naing) (62, 68, 66, 69) and The Philippines (Danny Zarate, Marciano Pucay) (64, 68, 65, 68) 265; Thailand (Thaworn Wiratchant, Chawalit Plaphol) (65, 67, 67, 67) and Italy (Costantino Rocca, Alessandro Napoleoni) (63, 71, 64, 68) 266; The Netherlands (Guido Van Der Valk, Niel Kraaij) (62, 69, 68, 70) 269; Spain (Diego Borrero, Ivo Giner (69, 70, 66, 68), Finland (Mikko Ilonen, Kalle Vainola) (66, 70, 67, 70), Malaysia (Danny Chia, Periasamy Gunasegaran) (67, 70, 64, 72) and India (Mukesh Kumar, Feroz Ali Mollah) (67, 68, 63, 75) 273; Pakistan (Muhammad Munir, Imdad Hussain) (66, 75, 61, 72) 274; Hong Kong (Dominique Boulet, Derek Fung) (68, 68, 67, 72) 275; China (Liang Wen-Chong, Zheng Wen-gen) (67, 69, 67, 73) and Taiwan (Lin Keng-Chi, Chen Tze-Chung) (64, 73, 66, 73) 276; Indonesia (Illyassyak, Wahyu Hendarma) (67, 74, 70, 73) 284; Greece (Eugenios Papadopoulos, George Nikitaidis) (70, 75, 67, 73) 285; Slovenia (Daniel Kraljic, Janez Grilic) (65, 77, 68, 78) 288; The Czech Republic (Peter Mruzek, Karel Skopovy) (72, 76, 67, 78) 293; Mauritius (Billy Narraina, Vishnoo Seeneevassen (72, 73, 71, 82) 298.
