Four in a row for Naren Kumar

BANGALORE Oct. 13. V.R. Naren Kumar of Team MRF triumphed in the Rally Royal Orchid Park Plaza de Bangalore, the fourth round of the Motorsports Association of India's (MAI) National rally championship. It was Naren's fourth successive win in the 1,600cc category after wins at the Coimbatore, Nasik and Goa rounds.

Naren and co-driver D. Ram Kumar finished the 11 special stages stretched over 120.6 kms in 1:43.46 minutes. "The conditions were rough and there was slush. I am glad that my car ran well and there were no problems,'' said Naren.

Breathing down Naren's neck was Arjun Balu (co-driver R. Kumar) also of Team MRF. Arjun, battling hard to retrieve the 87-second deficit he suffered against Naren here on Saturday, found himself staring at bad luck when his car stalled just 500 metres from the finish.

"A couple of bends away from the finish, my engine stopped. I lost two minutes before it started again,'' Arjun said. He however managed to hang on to his second place with a timing of 1:47.47 minutes.

Sunday's fastest timings were clocked by Vikram Mathias (co-driver B.S. Sujith Kumar) also of Team MRF. He would well have secured the second slot but for a one-minute penalty he suffered on Saturday for checking in a minute early. Vikram emerged third with 1:47.45 minutes.

On a day when Team MRF was cruising steadily, a false note was struck as Karandip Singh and co-driver Jaidas Menon crashed into a tree in the third stage and had to withdraw from the rally in the final stage. "The connecting rod broke. When I was taking the turn I was not getting the power and that caused the accident,'' said Karandip.

In the 1,400cc category, it was all smiles for Jiby Malliakal and co-driver Nikhil Pai. Jiby clocked 1:57.19 minutes. He notched his fourth win on the trot while edging past V. Sham Sundar and Srinivas Murthy at 2:03.53.

Lohit Urs and co-driver M.K. Bopanna won the Rally Star Cup and made it two-in-a-row. Bopanna was timed at 2:00.49.

The results (provisional): 1,600cc: 1. Naren Kumar and D. Ram Kumar (Team MRF) 1:43.46; 2. Arjun Balu and Ram Kumar (Team MRF) 1:47.47; 3. Vikram Mathias and Sujith Kumar (Team MRF), 1:48.45.

1,400cc: 1. Jiby Malliakal and Nikhil Pai (Gulf Oil) 1:57.19; 2. Sham Sundar and Srinivas Murthy (Bluelines) 2:04.13; 3. Rahul Kantharah and Vivek Bhat (S.K. Patil) 2:15.03.

Rally Star Cup: 1. Lohit Urs and M.K. Bopanna (S.K. Patil) 2:00.49; 2. Parvinder Singh Saundh and Paritosh Kohok 2:02.02; 3. Ram Prasanth and G. Satish, 2:02.41.
