Tamil Nadu-Chennai
By Our Staff Reporter
In a show of strength, the Tamizhaga Cable TV Operator's General Welfare Association (TCOA) arranged for the participation of more than 2,000 operators in its first State-level conference. "We are gathered here to discuss how to improve services and protect ourselves", TCOA member, Francis Xavier, told the gathering. "The Centre has to recognise the cable TV sector as an industry and frame laws and regulations to protect it", the TCOA president, Sakilan, said. A representative of the Karnataka Cable TV Chamber of Commerce, Amrut Kumar, said consumers complained about high rates, but did not realise that they rose due to pay channels. He asked operators to be united and increase awareness of their services and the costs involved. "Consumers do not know how the channels loot us. Every new channel comes with a `pay' tag", he told them. He also announced that Union Minister, Anant Kumar, and subsequently the Centre had recognised August 21 as Cable TV Operators Day. A representative of a Kerala cable TV operators association, Govindan, said the proposed addressability system threatened the future of cable TV operators and that they would have to bargain for their rights with the Centre.
