Defining moment

Sir, — This has reference to the article `A defining moment for Kashmir' by Malini Parthasarathy (Oct. 14). The author has been relentlessly advocating the efficacy of embarking on a creative engagement of Pakistan. Now that the Kashmiris have in no uncertain terms renewed their faith in the Indian democratic system, the Vajpayee administration, without resorting to empty rhetoric, must respond to their aspirations and expectations. The moment has surely come to decide whether to go for corrective measures or to latch on to punitive actions. Indeed it is a defining moment.

There can be no military solution to the core issue of Kashmir and only a political solution can be lasting. The one and only process holding the key is dialogue with an open mind.

S. Koyappan,

Sivaganga, T.N.

Sir, — Ms. Malini Parthasarathy's article calls for true statesmanship on the part of the politicians at the helm of affairs to come to grips, seizing the present situation and honour the solemn commitments made to Kashmiris at the time of the State's accession.

As the State stands on a pedestal of its own, it is futile to argue that time will pave the way for the State's people to accept the governing pattern of other States.

Inasmuch as a section of Kashmir is under the occupation of Pakistan, there is no escape from entering into a bilateral dialogue, irrespective of the prevalent political atmosphere in that country, so that the international community could be taken into confidence again about New Delhi's sincere efforts to bring the Kashmir issue to the logical end.

Syed Gowher Ali,

Chennai
