Indian paratroopers return from Alaska

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI OCT. 19. The Indian paratroopers who participated in the Indo-US joint airborne exercise at Alaska returned home today. Codenamed ``Geronimo Thrust'' it was conducted at Fort Richardson, Alaska by troops of the First Battalion 501 Parachute Infantry Regiment of the U.S. Army and 50 (Independent) Parachute Brigade of the Indian Army.

Personnel and aircraft of the two countries participated, alongwith eight senior Indian Army and Air Force observers.

The exercise was described as ``unique'' by defence sources here as it was the first such drill involving the Indian Army on American soil.

An Indian Air Force IL-76 alongwith the Indian contingent flew to the U.S. to participate in the exercise. The Indian contingent was also shown various facilities used for operational training by the US Army.

The joint exercise provided an opportunity for troops of both countries to interact, understand and familiarise themselves with each other's procedures, weapons and equipment.
