ALMORA (UTTARANCHAL) OCT. 19. New vistas of excellence in dance and music opened up here today as the President, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, laid the foundation stone for the Uday Shankar Academy for Dance and Music. Dr. Kalam asked the people of Uttaranchal to strive for excellence in fine arts just like they were doing in other fields.

"You are a new State. Join hands to achieve rapid growth, but never allow wealth or power to overrun your true character of selfless service to the needy,'' he said.

Addressing children separately, the President advised them to continue blossoming as the gifts of God.

"Never allow negative influences to ruin you,'' he told them, adding a word to the mothers to give their best to the children.

Savitri, a 10-year-old, observed that Dr. Kalam was the first leader after Nehru to have invited children for a direct interaction.

The Uttaranchal Chief Minister, Narayan Dutt Tiwari, seemed overwhelmed by the warm reception given to the President. The State would endeavour to live up to the high expectations of Dr. Kalam, he said.

On the inauguration of a new Mobile Clinic and Research Centre, a joint project of the Technology Information Forecasting and Assessment Council and the Uttaranchal Government, by the President, Mr. Tiwari thanked Dr. Kalam for calling upon the rich to help in instituting more such mobile clinics which could reach out to the remote areas.

The Union Tourism Minister, Jagmohan, said efforts were on to develop several tourist circuits in Uttaranchal. "Come up with the right proposals and we will bail you out of financial or other crunches,'' he said.

The Uttaranchal Governor, S.S. Barnala, Union Minister Bachi Singh Rawat, a few Uttaranchal Ministers and several MLAs were among those present.
