River water not property of any single State: Shekhawat

By Our Special Correspondent

ALWAR OCT. 19. The Vice-President, Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, today said river waters could not be treated as the property of any single State. "Flowing water is the property of the nation. It should be equitably shared by all the States,'' he said here, without referring to any particular State.

``The States now find it difficult to share water with other States. However, they don't seem to mind allowing water going waste. Lot of water flows down to the sea,'' Mr. Shekhawat said speaking at a function organised to felicitate him by the citizens of Alwar.

The function, organised at the Company Bagh grounds, was attended by the leaders of both the Congress as well as the BJP and a large number of the public.

Earlier, Mr. Shekhawat opened the 13th annual conference of the Association of Physicians of India, Rajasthan chapter, in the city. He said there were many issues on which the countrymen could reach a consensus and political parties could work together to find solutions.

He said the Governments at the Centre and in the States were in bad shape because of financial problems. "Many of them are neck deep in debt,'' he said. The Governments were helpless on issues like severe unemployment when no Government could escape the duty of providing jobs to all qualified persons.
