TN police have no role in Karnataka sending emissary

By K.T. Sangameswaran

CHENNAI OCT. 21. With Tamil Nadu distancing itself from Karnataka's efforts at rescuing H.Nagappa, former Minister, who has been taken hostage by the brigand, Veerappan, the police say they have no role to play in the neighbouring State sending emissaries into the forest.

The Veerappan gang is strongly suspected to be hiding in the Karnataka side. The joint operations by the Special Task Force of both States are only for catching the brigand, STF sources said.

As it had been raining in the forest off and on in the past few days, the going for the police was tough. It had been raining in the Sathyamangalam forest for the past 10 days. Particularly, there were heavy rains on Saturday night.

Though nearly two months have elapsed since Mr. Nagappa was kidnapped from his Kamagere residence in Kollegal taluk, the police have no clues to the whereabouts of the gang. Going by experience, a heavy drizzle or rain seems to help the brigand when he has a person in his `custody'. The police practice is to lie in wait near waterholes as they expect him to frequent the place for drinking water. Now that the jungle streams have received freshes, the chances of spotting him are remote.

Further, mysterious as it may appear, there is no dearth of ``message carriers'' for Veerappan, he having already sent three audio-cassettes after he kidnapped Mr. Nagappa on August 25.
