Man behind 'plot' killed

By Manas Dasgupta

AHMEDABAD OCT. 22. The man who was arrested for allegedly plotting to assassinate the Gujarat Chief Minister, Narendra Modi, has been killed in an "encounter'' with police.

Samirkhan Pathan (30), who was arrested three weeks ago from near the Geeta Mandir State Transport bus station here and who claimed to be a member of the Pakistan-based terrorist outfit, Jaish-e-Mohammad, was killed when he tried to "escape'' from the police cordon after snatching a police service revolver.

P.P. Pandey, Joint Commissioner of the Crime Branch police, claimed that Samirkhan was taken to Usmanpura locality in the heart of the city on a transfer warrant around 2 a.m. to identify the spot where he had allegedly murdered a police constable in 1996. Samirkhan suddenly snatched the service revolver of an inspector and opened fire. None was injured. Two other inspectors then retaliated. Three bullets hit Samirkhan.
