Work still hit in South

By S. Annamalai

MADURAI OCT. 24. A day after the Chief Minister invoked the Essential Services Maintenance Act against the striking government staff and teachers, administrative work continued to remain affected in the southern districts. The strike, in fact, intensified in Ramanathapuram, where doors of many offices were seen locked. However, there was a slight improvement in the staff turnout in Dindigul, Theni, Sivaganga and Kanyakumari.

The Revenue and Education departments were the worst hit in Madurai, where attendance was around 50 per cent for the second day. Officials admitted that only `emergency work' was being transacted in the Revenue department. Routine work such as drought relief has come to a standstill. Tension prevailed in the office of the Joint Director of Agriculture here, when some unidentified persons barged in to scare away the staff who reported for duty. The police intervened to prevent any damage to property.

Attendance in government offices came down from 78 per cent to 74 per cent in Virudhunagar, while it improved to 43 per cent in Sivaganga, against 38 per cent yesterday. In Ramanathapuram district, the Collectorate wore a deserted look with about 90 per cent of the staff staying away. But Registration, PWD and Highways offices functioned with skeletal staff.

Employees of the Revenue and Education departments and the ministerial staff of the Police Department in Kanyakumari continued with their strike. There was 53 per cent attendance in Tuticorin district, with more absentees in the Social Welfare and Police departments. About 75 per cent of staff turned up for work in Dindigul, except in the Revenue department, which recorded 20 per cent attendance. In Theni district, the attendance was about 70 per cent.
