Amendments to CPC upheld

New Delhi Oct. 25. The Supreme Court today upheld the validity of the 1999 amendments to the Civil Procedure Code (CPC) providing for speedy disposal of civil cases which had prompted large-scale lawyers' agitation across the country.

A three-judge Bench, comprising Chief Justice B.N. Kirpal, Justice Y.K. Sabharwal and Justice Arijit Pasayat, held that the amended provisions were not in any way ultra vires of the Constitution.
