HC confirms death sentence

Bangalore Oct. 28. Justice H.N.Narayan and Justice M.S.Rajendra Prasad constituting a Division Bench of the Karnataka High Court, today dismissed a criminal appeal filed by Praveen Kumar of Dakshina Kannada District, and confirmed the death sentence imposed by the Sessions Judge, Mangalore.

The appellant was tried for the offence of murdering Appi Shiragarithy and three others.

Praveen Kumar is the son of Appi Shiragarithy's brother. She had three sons and three daughters and the accused was staying with them.

It was stated that in the intervening night of February 23/24 1994, the accused murdered the woman and three others.

The judges observed that the appellant had taken the lives of four persons in a brutal manner.

The accused, who had no regard for values, hatched a plan to rob the ornaments of his close relatives. The judges further observed that the extreme penalty imposed by the Sessions Judge had been confirmed.
