The CCCK is holding a two-day seminar, which began on Monday, on "A road map to private universities: emerging challenges in higher education", at the St. Joseph's College of Commerce here. Representatives from various catholic college managements in the State, academics, and government representatives are participating in the seminar, which will deliberate on issues of higher education. Speaking at the seminar, V.B.Coutinho, Vice-Chancellor, Gulbarga University, said that institutions with a reputation for providing excellent education and believing in social justice should be encouraged to look towards becoming a private universities. These institutions could begin in a small way and strive towards becoming autonomous, without depending on government support. Then, they could aim at achieving "deemed university" status, he said. For private initiatives in higher education to become successful, educational institutions should have support from industry, excellence in education, admission based on merit, cost-effective education, a curriculum that was marketable, flexible educational programmes for students, and accountability, Prof. Coutinho said. Father Ronald Prabhu, Provincial of Jesuits of Karnataka, Fr. Aveline D'Souza, President, CCCK, and Fr. Pradeep Sequira, Rector, St. Joseph's College, were also present.
